Senior School - Years 7-11

Years 7&8

Years 7&8 provides boys and girls with a real academic advantage over their counterparts in senior schools. The progress in Mathematics, English and French in particular are substantial in comparison. The individualised approach to learning,  smaller class sizes and the rich, creative and challenging curriculum prepares the children significantly better for GCSE exams in the future and many of our alumni are able to take GCSE exams a year early as a direct result of the grounding they have received at Halstead St Andrew's. At an early stage the school will provide an informed opinion based on the child's academic abilities and social development and will point parents towards a suitable senior school.

The sports, music, drama and extended curriculum opportunities available to children in Years 7 & 8 are also notable. Our relatively small numbers in each year group provide the majority with an opportunity to represent the school in a variety of events. These opportunities may not be available in larger senior schools with three or four times as many pupils in each year to choose from.

Children who have attended Halstead St Andrew's are renowned for their confidence and their ability to fit seamlessly into their next schools. This, to a great extent, is due to the additional support and care they receive and the broad base of the education provided. Most of the children will have joined Halstead St Andrew's when they were young and have moved up the years as generations have done before them. We try to provide every child with a sense of pride in their school and a feeling of responsibility for their actions.

Over the years, the children all take their turn as senior pupils and gain enormously from the time honoured traditions that have been practised over many terms.

They are indeed 'big fish in a small pond' and have an early chance to learn very important lessons about responsibility and reward, and also about organising and managing the younger members of the community. Of course none of this could take place without input from our caring and dedicated staff. The development of character is a primary objective in our programme of pastoral care.

The senior schools inform us that a significant proportion of pupils who move on to them at the end of Year 8 eventually achieve positions of responsibility in their final years there. They are recognisably more mature and responsible and are renowned for their rounded approach to school life.

Years 9-11

From 2026 we will be extending our provision into Year 9 and by the academic year 2028/2029 our first cohort of children will sit their GCSE examinations.  The foundations that the children have gained at Year 7 and Year 8 will provide them with the academic strength and life skills to excel in the final three years of Halstead St Andrew’s School.

The Senior school will offer a breadth of examination subjects, ensuring the children are well prepared to take up a 6th Form place or move into the world of work with the key knowledge to be successful in their chosen career.  The academic rigour will be complemented by a rich co-curricular offering inclusive of The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, charitable endeavours and an extensive programme of trips and excursions within the UK and abroad.

In a challenging and ever-changing modern world, the children will be supported and guided through well qualified staff within a strong pastoral system.  As children move up through the Senior school, the needs and requirements for support changes and staff will be trained to support the children through their teenage years.  Pupil wellbeing is of the utmost importance and Halstead St Andrew’s School prides itself on supporting the whole child, ensuring they are in good health both physically and mentally.

Education is changing and we believe the offering of a smaller, family orientated school will provide families within the local community and beyond the individualised learning experience that is so crucial in preparing the children for the modern world.  Halstead St Andrew’s Senior School will be a special environment that will provide the children with the challenge academically but remain true to our values and place great importance on developing  character alongside a love of learning.
